Royals ease through to next round of FA Trophy in preliminary round replay.
Three second half goals saw Sutton Town cruise through to the next round of the FA Trophy in a replay which they dominated throughout.
It took just eight minutes for the home side to take the lead. A long throw-in from the left was misjudged by the Rugby goalkeeper, allowing Luke Chapman to tap in from close range on his debut for the Royals.
The remainder of the first half saw the home side bombard the Rugby goal, and Louis Connor was forced into a number of fine saves to keep the score at 1-0 at the break. At the other end of the pitch, Harry Harris and Robbie Banks had the best chances for the visitors, but Niall Cooper was rarely troubled in the Sutton goal.
The second half started quietly, with few chances for either side in the opening fifteen minutes. It was substitute James Reid who found the breakthrough after finding himself in space on the left. His shot across goal rolled under the goalkeeper and into the back of the net to back it 2-0.
Reid should have doubled his goal tally ten minutes later when he found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper, however his shot flew wide of the post. It took less than five minutes for the Royals to go three-up however, as a low cross from debutant Scott Lycett was turned in at close range by Jon Jones.
Rugby were now being limited to long-range efforts, with substitute Luke Keen having the best of their efforts. It was always Sutton who looked the more likely to increase their lead, and James Reid once again had his head in his hands with ten minutes to go after seeing his shot from a wide angle trickle agonisingly wide.
The home side added their fourth eight minutes from time; a ball played through by James Quiggin found Ross Miller in space, and he slotted past the keeper to round off a good night for the Royals. They will now face St Neots in the next round on 22nd October.
